Carving3040/63 a-e

Carving of a sled with dog hitch. The sled (part a) is made of many individual pieces (each cross bar and each runner is a separate piece - lashed by sinew done in the way a real sled would be lashed). On top of the sled is lemming fur for a driver to sit on. Tucked under the lemming fur is a separate harpoon (part d) and a separate hitch line and toggle (part e). The driver (part b) is carved in a separate piece and has a separate rifle (part c). Attached to the front of the sled is the hitch for the dogs complete with a toggle for the attachment of each dog.

Spear2948/155

Long bamboo spear. A carved bone head with eight barbs in two staggered rows, bound to a narrow wooden upper shaft with string and wax. This is decorated with carved diagonal patterns filled with lime and is inserted into a larger bamboo shaft and bound with rattan and beeswax. The lower shaft has been thinly shaved towards the join and a few thin lines have been scratched around the top and butt.

Spear2948/153

Long spear with carved bone head. The edges of the head have four barbs each, staggered, along the sides. Head is bound to a narrow wooden shaft with string and wax. The convex side has remnants of a light green dye over the middle half of the head. The wooden shaft is carved into diagonal patterns filled with lime. It is inserted into a slightly larger bamboo shaft and bound with rattan and wax. The shaft has been thinly shaved towards the join and a few thin lines have been scratched around the shaft just below this. The nodules have been shaved smooth.

Nose Ornament2948/50

Pig bone nose ornament, noticeably wider at one end. A broad ring has been carved at centre, with long arches on both sides of the bone, forming ends that appear as crescents from the front or as arrow points from a top view. The bone has been polished.

Nose Ornament2948/48

Pig bone nose ornament, slightly curving, noticeably wider at one end. A column of over three centimetres in length has been carved at centre with crescents at its ends on opposite sides. These in turn form ends that appear as crescents from the front or as arrow points from a top view.

Nose Ornament2948/47

Pig bone nose ornament. The bone has been carved to leave a central ring. On both sides two thin arms sprout on opposite sides of the ring for a couple of centimetres, culminating in molar-like shapes with four spikes.
