Nose Ornament2948/33

Nose piece (Bipane). Two clam are shells carved into thick crescents, tied together with rattan through a small hole in each piece and glued with beeswax. Marked striations on the back run horizontally on one shell, diagonally on the other. The undersides (front) are different in tone; one light grey with darker spots, the other slightly darker with white spots. The curving tips almost touch.

Basket is decorated with upper and lower bands of purple triangles with alternating strips of red and yellow passing through horizontally; central discrete figures in a stepped design encircle the centre. Lid: central sunburst of black with two rows of purple triangles with alternating strips of red and yellow passing through. Base: plaited origin and plain twined work (over several warp strands). Sides: twisted twined work. Slightly indented flange around upper rim of basket holds lid in place.

Rounded, jar-like basket (a) with a flat, square base, flat shoulder, raised flange opening, and flat, circular, fitted lid (b). Base: checker work weave. Sides and lid: wrapped twined weave. Lid: base and warp; cedar bark weft; natural and aniline-dyed swamp grass; purple and orange concentric bands. Sides: band composed of alternating orange and purple oblique lines. Colour: yellow.

Designs on lid: spirals in green, yellow, and red from center with complex concentric band. Designs around sides: five bird figures around sides (in purple and red) with complex bands in purple with yellow and green obliques. Lid is indented from basket sides.

Mask3062/1

Painted bark cloth mask. Body of mask is made of a single piece of bark cloth, sewn together at the back of the head with the neck and shoulder portion remaining loose. A round panel stitched to the front is painted with large eyes, thick eyebrows and an open mouth with teeth. A large protruding nose of cloth emerges from the centre of the face. The forehead comes to a peak above the face panel. Two large oblong ears are attached to the piece on either side of the face and angle upwards. The body and head are painted with lines and colour blocks in blue, yellow and brown. The back of the cloth has paint marks from the painting on the front.
