Q'umukwa (Chief of the Undersea World) mask. Deeply carved and painted mask with a large bulbous nose, sweeping brows, prominent cheeks, deeply layered planes, a receding forehead and jaw, and an open, projecting mouth with a fin-like fold on either side. Bear-like ears and small round cutout eyes. Black is overpainted on ultramarine blue with white, red and blue details. Nails on top with fibre remnants and cords attached to back.
Seal-shaped bowl, with head and tail at ends of the oval bowl. Flippers on sides and columns of painted dots alternating in red and black on the figure's sides behind the flippers.
Carved alder wood headdress with attached wolf skin. Wood is stained and details on ears and mouth are painted red and black. Nose is blue and red; eyes, brows, and other details are in black. The skin is attached to forehead and goes down approximately 1 metre.
The shape of this mask is triangular with two planes intersecting on the median of the face. The forehead is high and smooth. The forehead is overpainted by a thunderbird design in black and green with the bird's head on the mask's left side. The thunderbird has oval black eyes surrounded by a plain tapering oval and a green area, a cross shape in the ovoid nostril, and four green split u feathers. The black eyebrows of the mask are raised and extend from the nose to the back edge of the mask. The eyes are placed on the upper cheek plane, with no orb, under a projecting and sloping under-brow. The eye is shallowly engraved and its centre is a round hole. A black band is painted across the eyes with some unpainted patches showing through. The nose, from which the cheek planes slope, has black drawn-back hollow nostrils. Black and green split u thunderbird feather designs extend down the cheeks. Narrow black lips are pulled back and down showing twelve plain teeth. A ridge around the bottom of the mask, painted black in the middle, is the chin.
Horizontal whale headdress that has a carved skeletal body, dorsal fin attached to black spine by wooden wedge and glue; black hair, ends wrapped in wire, have been inserted into five drilled holes along back of fin; light blue band, close to top of fin, has a circular hole; carved profile face at base has square abalone shell teeth; fin outlined in black; backbone has unpainted spaces between disks, four pieces of inlaid abalone on each side of fin; circular hole at neck; tail flukes have incised triangular areas between two black ovoid eyes, orange-red and light blue u forms on either side of eyes, flukes outlined in black; two curved ribs on each side attach to spine and black band base, final rib before tail is black; band base has two incised crescentic marks on each side, under tail flukes are two circular eyes with split u forms on either side, incised triangular design between eyes, crescentic shape above each eye; pectoral fins overlap band base and have u, ovoid and a tri-pointed design; head has a curved forehead with a vertical ridge between the eyes; orbital ridge melds with the snout and lip band; upper portion of eyes protrudes; black eyes in narrow pointed eyelid lines; upper incisors overlap lower lip band. Beneath jaw is an incised dogfish head with black brows, flat flaring nostrils and a wide continuous lip band. Underside of tail flukes signed: Dempsey Bob 1987; b imposed on a d/87.
Forehead mask of a woman, whose head is a rattle, sits on the forehead of an eagle; hair, black wire wrapped around ends, is inserted into eleven drilled holes on top of the woman's head; black and orange-red paint are used to emphasize features; front human head has black brows and eyes; wide flat nose has orange-red nostrils; wide continuous orange-red lip band; prominent cheek ridges; ears on either side of head; back of head is yellow cedar with flat face depicted in incised circle; black brows; circular black eyes; broad flat nose with orange-red nostrils; wide continuous orange-red lip band. Body, shown only on front, has arms slightly extended and bent, elbows and forearms rest on eagle's brows, hands are downturned; legs are drawn up next to chest, four black claw-like toes on each foot. Eagle has black brows with horizontal rows of short orange- red lines; black bulbous eyes; thin sharp beak incorporates wide orange-red lip band, flattened semi-circular nostrils on either side; orbital ridge melds with cheek ridge which follows line of lip band; triangular depressed area under lower beak. On reverse, a leather strip is attached to either side by a singular stitch of white waxed cord, cord is also tied around leather. Signed inside: 'B' 'D'/87 'Dempsey Bob Tahltan Tlingit.' Unpainted wood is finished with oil.
Alder wood eagle mask with bear's head in centre of forehead; copper nails used to attach black and white bear's fur to outer rim; one stitch of white waxed cord attaches fur between bear's ears; white fur along eagle's jaw line; hair, with black wire wrapped ends, extend from four holes drilled into rim of bear's ears; features are emphasized in black and orange-red paint; bear's ears are outlined in black, centre has incised split u above two vertical lines; ridge in centre of forehead; black slanting brows; black eyes; orange-red nostrils and lip band; upper teeth are visible, top and bottom incisors overlap lip band. Eagle has black brows with small horizontal incised lines, fur overlaps brows; bulbous protruding eyes; orbital ridge melds with protruding cheek ridge; thin sharply curved beak incorporates wide orange-red lip band; flattened semi-circular orange-red nostrils on either side of beak. On reverse, leather strips attached to either side by one stitch of white cord; mask signed 'Dempsey Bob, Tahltan-Tlingit '87'; incised 'B' in a 'D' next to signature; unpainted wood finished with oil.
Flat-bottomed basketry cradle. Large slat coiled, imbricated and beaded cradle. Imbricated animal motif and wrapped rim; beaded at top and imbricated on narrow ends. Sides have a red and yellow horse-like motif. Four hide thongs, one on each side. Bottom is coiled.
Unpainted mask, except for red along the outer surface of the lips and the inner circle of the eyes. Forehead is rounded and down sloping. Eyes are very deep set. Heavy raised eyebrows meet at the upper nose and extend upwards across the forehead and then down to the temples, and merge with the cheekbones. Narrow, sharply curved nose, hooks under the upper lip. Lips are narrow and flare at the corners and are pursed at the centre. Chin is a square ridge at the bottom front. Horsehair extends in twenty-six bunches from the top back edge of the mask. Two piece leather head strap is tied and nailed on the inside.
A shovel-shaped, brown wood ladle with a bird head handle. The bird has rounded eyes and a continuous downward pointing triangle at either side of the top middle of the closed beak to create a folded diamond shape over the top.
