String Puppet3472/21

Small string puppet of a prince or king character. He wears matching dark blue tunic and pants. The tunic has a metal gold belt and a large bright blue plastic(?) jewel decoration adhered to a shield-shaped textile on his chest. The tunic and pants are hemmed with bronze embroidery ribbon. He wears a long red cape with off-white fur collar. He has painted light grey-blue socks and brown shoes. He has pink lips, blue eyes, and reddish-brown ear-length hair, moustache and beard. On top of his head is a red and blue and yellow crown. His hands, legs and face are carved. The control stick is attached to the head by a long metal rod, with strings extending from the control stick to limbs. The body is jointed at the elbows, knees, shoulders, and hips – with fabric upper arms.

Raven Led The Way3631/1

Paddle carved from a single piece of light coloured wood, with a raven painted along one side of the blade and onto the throat. Paddle has a flattened ovular blade, thick cylindrical throat, and flattened shaft that flares outward at the top. Shaft has wide notches carved into it, below barrel-shaped grip; grip painted black. Painted raven is made up of formline design elements; done in dark blue, dark red, light blue, black, bronze, and green-blue. Raven's head is pointed downward, touching bottom edge of blade, wings are held close to body, and tail feathers are straightened. Bulbous face- with thick brows, a large nose, and open mouth- painted across upper half of wing. Eyes of raven and face, circle on upper half of tail, and sides of grip are covered with a crushed black mineral. Artist inscription written on back centre of blade: "Raven Led the Way" JADE HANUSE 2023 © Anuximana JH; rest of back is undecorated.

Mask3428/2

Vejigante carnival mask of painted paper mache construction. Mask is mainly painted a light grey-blue, with purple and white dots, and purple dashes on the horns. The white face with cut-out holes at the eyes and mouth. There are floral-like designs in gold and purple that spiral out from around the eyes. The eye sockets and nostrils are painted purple, with large false lashes glued to the upper edge of the eye sockets. Three long curved horns project out from the top and sides. The top, centre horn extends up, and curves forward, and has a small gold cross in front of green fern-like leaves. The right horn curls forward, in front of the face, and the left horn curls up and over the head. The top of the head is lined with four large red flowers with yellow stamens, and two orange and black butterfly. On both sides, a small painted white metal key hangs from the horns. The snout has a large open mouth with black stitching along the lips, and three pointed white teeth with red gums. Black, grey and red ribbons are tied to each side of the mask and hang down. The interior is painted red. Signed and dated inside.

Large Vejigante carnival mask of painted paper mache construction. Mask is of a bright yellow, red, and orange sun, with alternating long and short horns extending in a half circle around the head. Mask has a long wide nose, slit eye openings, and wide open mouth with three-pointed teeth; mouth outlined with red paint, teeth done in white. There are pronounced nostrils above centre of mouth, and thin ridges across forehead that connect to horns. Wavy painted lines extend from mouth towards horns; done in dark red and various orange shades. Short horns have wavy uneven edges; long horns are conical with protruding ridges that curl along the length. Gold-coloured semi-circular bar connects the five large horns near their midpoints. Hanging rod, made of plastic pipe, attached to back centre. Interior of mask is painted red; artist signature and date made, "2018 Roman" inscribed along left interior side.

Handmade Book3565/1

Handmade 28 page book of off-white amate (amatl) paper, illustrating different types of nzahki cut-out figures. Accordian style pages. The front and back covers have green ribbons running horizontally across the top and bottom, extending 4.5 - 5 cm past the edges. The front cover has 2 brown paper cut-out figures adhered to it, with handwritten title(?) in faded red ink (note: ink is mostly too faint to read, but ends with 1975?). Pages 1-7 have handwritten entries in blue ink (in Spanish); pages 8-28 each have a brown paper cut-out figure attached, with handwriting above and captions (name of figure?) below each one.

Container3512/36

Tortoise shell snuff container with strands of twine extending from the top edge; twine decorated with beads made of plant fibre and ostrich egg shells. An apron-like cover, made of rabbit skin, is secured around the front of the tortoise shell. It is tied in place with straps knotted through holes drilled in the back of the shell. Additional straps remain loose. Hanging from the bottom edge of the rabbit skin are rows of alternating plant fibre and ostrich egg shell beads. Back of shell is uncovered; brown-red plant fibre is adhered to the back bottom edge. Interior of shell is stuffed with plant fibre.

Qur'an3397/1

Illuminated Qur’an with script written in black ink. Covers made of brown leather, with incised and painted decorations. Spine made of painted cloth. Front cover has a raised, inner border, outlined in black paint on the outer edge and a wide band of gold leaf along the inner edge. Alternating incised lines and dots along the raised portion. Lines done in black, circles in gold. In the centre of the cover is a raised oval, with pointed ends, outlined in gold and black. Black curvilinear motifs across surface of oval, with impressed dots on each side. Dots are filled with gold leaf. Back cover has a raised, inner border, outlined in black and gold on either side. Covers lined with paper. Each page of the Qur’an has lines of script, with floral motifs throughout sentences, bordered by simple black and gold lines. The first two pages are highly decorated. Motifs are done in gold and blue, with pink, red, white and orange highlights throughout. Designs include curvilinear lines, feathers, flowers and arrows. Gold, red and blue decorative bands, with floral motifs, divide sections of text. Some pages have curvilinear designs along the edges. Designs are done in gold, blue and red, and filled with floral motifs. Pencil inscription on last page.

Ceramic shaft tomb figure of a squatting male (priest) holding a perforated rattle in his right hand, wearing a headdress; his left hand is raised up, touching his head. Figure's face is long and rectangular in shape. He has a sharp nose and triangular shaped mouth, with his tongue visible. The lips and eyes are carved in low relief. He has large oval-shaped ears with circular earrings. Front of headdress has decorative, raised diagonal lines across it. Body partly painted red. Past breaks and repairs visible on surface; a small triangular piece is missing from the back. Figure is hollow.
