Scales Box3559/15 a-b

Thin, irregularly-shaped black wooden box (part a) for metal scales (part b); hinged lid slides open from right side, secured with a metal band on left end. Lid has elephant motif carved in relief across entire surface. Design consists of a large elephant followed by two smaller ones walking towards left side of box. Background is filled with groupings of dots; border with inverted triangles carved along edges of lid. Main body of box is undecorated. The metal scales rest inside the box; walls carved to fit scales. Scales consist of a metal beam and two circular pans, attached on either end with three pieces of thread each; beam has shears and pointer protruding from the top centre edge. Tips of beam are pointed and decorated with incised diagonal lines; "X"'s and diagonal lines decorate sides of shears. Pointer and pans are undecorated.

Container3559/6

Lidded coconut shell container on wooden stand; all components are attached with plant fibre cordage. Container and lid each have four loops, one on each side, near their openings. Loops on front and back of lid slip onto loops on container. Loops on left and right sides of both are tied together with a knotted cord; cord is threaded through holes drilled into sides of stand. Lid is made of a small coconut, cut in half. Stand made up is four curved panels, secured along long straight edges; giving stand an "X" shape.

Stringed Instrument3559/30

Stringed musical instrument with a cylindrical sound barrel, wide neck and curved head. Three metal strings, tied around rod extending from bottom of sound barrel, connect to three tuning pegs at head. Pink-purple snakeskin covers head of barrel; secured with nails. Base of barrel has a ring of teardrop-shaped holes around central circular hole; two tiered rows of carved triangles decorate edges. Tuning pegs have cylindrical bodies, pointed tips and the bases taper towards a circular base. Pick and bridge top are attached to instrument by a cord. Shoe lace tied between tuning pegs and around rod at the base, to use as a carrying strap.

Mouth Harp3559/28

Bamboo mouth harp with a decorative cover; cover is a hollow pink tube with purple designs engraved across surface. Design consists of bands filled with diamonds, diagonal lines, scallops and zigzags. Long piece of bright pink yarn tied around end of mouth harp, and it passes through small hole on top of tube, holding it inside; large tassel on end of yarn. Harp is an irregularly-shaped rectangle that tapers to an oval-shaped end; angled lip at tip. Thin tongue carved through centre.

Charm3559/45

Ten charms secured together with a tied loop cord; charms are silver, cord is decorated with white and pink stripes. Charms consist of a ring, short cable chain, and circle with triangular protrusions on either side. Small arches extend from all edges of circles and five small fish decorations are attached to the arches along the bottom edges. All of the fish are angular and have diagonal lines incised across their front and backs. The first charm from the right also has a jade attachment. Jade carving is circular and has a wave-like motif extending from the top edge; additional wavy line incised towards bottom of jade.

Food Basket3559/5 a-c

Food carrying basket with three stacking sections with a long rounded handle that loops down and up again along both sides, forming a carrying handle at top. The round containers are stacked together with a lid on the top one; all three have side loops that slide over the upward bent halves of the handle, which helps hold them in place. Additional rings looped on either of handle. Lid on top container made of wood panels with angled rattan(?) sides; loop on top centre, for handling. Large squat "X" designs on front and back sides of all containers. Entire basket is coloured red.

Incense Holder3559/1

Tube-shaped container with lid; container and lid are made of thin cardboard, wrapped with a layer of banana fibre. Lid is attached with a twisted cord, threaded through holes in sides. Excess cord at top of lid, allowing it to lift away from container opening. When fully removed from container, lid hangs along side.

Food Tray3559/10

Basketry food tray table with a high wall and flaring lip. Tray is circular and has a tall foot, decorated with an open weave; foot tapers inward slightly towards base. Open weave design consists of a wavy line with a horizontal band through the centre. Bottom of foot consists of a thick piece of rattan(?), bound with staples. Mark stamped on base of tray.

Two silver hair ornaments, one larger (part a) than the other (part b). Each is scissor-shaped, with the handle-like parts curled into spirals. Circular rivet hold blades together at centre.

Hunting Bow3559/7

Strung wooden bow with carved tips and grip; string made up of plant fibre. All elements are stained(?). Carvings on tips of bow consist of a curved plant motif; space between plants is cutout. Grip protrudes from belly of bow and is shaped like a sitting bird. String is twisted on either end, to secure loops around string nocks. Woven diamond in centre of string; bottom half of diamond is cutout, top is solid. Space between string nocks and carvings on tip are wrapped in plant fibre; grip wrapped in same fibre.
