Owl Figure3642/2

Large pear-shaped polychrome pottery owl. Wide-eyed upright bird with matte white slip and painted feathers. There are protruding vertical wings with painted feathers on each front, and an arch of tail feathers at the back. There is a small 1 cm hole at the back. The owl has large raised circular orange eyes with large black pupils encircled by small black dots. The owl has two pointed orange ears on top of the head that extend down into a small hooked beak with two small painted nostrils. 'ACOMA, N.M.' and 'P1581' on base. Unsigned.

Owl Figure3642/1

Large pear-shaped polychrome pottery owl. Wide-eyed upright bird with glossy off-white slip and painted feathers. The owl has large inset circular orange eyes encircled with lash-like lines. There are two small painted nostrils instead of a beak. Two small, rounded ears on top of the head that are orange on the front, and black on the back. There is a small 1 cm hole in the base. 'ACOMA, N.M.' and '4' on base. Unsigned.

Yei Rug3588/2

Rectangular rug with six Yei figures woven across surface; done in red, gold, light green, brown-black, and white. Figures are wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, tall boots, feathered headbands, pendants, and arm bands with long fringe(?). Bottom edges of shirts are decorated with bands of diamonds, stripes, and zigzags; additional diamond on right side of shirt, near waist. In between the feathered headbands and boots of the figures are pairs of rectangles; five pairs along top and bottom edges. Background of rug is cream, black border along all edges; left and right sides trimmed with orange. Cream and orange tassels extend from all corners of rug.

Kachina Figure3255/3

Large kachina doll. Carved from wood, figure has a square head, rounded, with feathers attached to top and left side, and a single ear emerging from the right. On a base of brown, face is painted orange, blue, black and yellow around the black slit eyes. The figure has a long round nose, painted blue and orange. A thin cotton string is wrapped around the neck. Head sits directly on the shoulders, with carved arms held close to body and fists at stomach. Torso is painted blue, orange and yellow, with a ‘v’ shaped chest decoration in white. A long skirt with black, orange and blue stepped patterning down the right side covers most of the legs, with large feet emerging below and attached to a square base.

Kachina Figure3255/4

Kachina doll. Carved from wood, figure has a large rounded head, helmet-like, painted dark pink, with a long black tubular snout set into a face decorated with one long painted eye and webbed patterning in blue and yellow on sides. A short, thick neck connects head to torso. Dark yellow arms are moveable, nailed on at the shoulders, and slightly bent at the elbows. Each hand holds a wooden knife attached by a nail. Torso is dark yellow and red, with a short white, blue and grey skirt below, revealing legs bent at the knees and feet attached to a square base of wood.

Large kachina doll. Carved from wood, figure has a long torso, painted light tan, with arms held close to body and fists at stomach. Square head has a black and white strip painted across eye area, and a black triangle for a mouth. Large square ears protrude from sides, decorated with a step motif in black and white, and a headdress in a similar stepped shape sits upright on head, decorated with feathers. A skirt sits at waist with patterning down the right side, above short legs and small feet. Figure is attached to a square wooden stand.

Large kachina doll. Carved from wood, figure is attached by nails through the feet to a square wooden stand (part b). Figure has a long torso, painted rust-red, with arms held close to body and fists at stomach, a wide square head, coloured a light green, with a long protruding nose and painted eyes and mouth. A thin twisted rope is tied around the neck and a red fringe of hair is attached to forehead. An ear protrudes from left side, and a bunch of tall brown and white feathers and down is attached opposite. A light tan skirt with small black linear design sits at waist, above short legs and large feet.

Face is light brown, with a stepped pattern on each cheek in black, pink and green beneath large black slit-shaped eyes. Snout is a protruding tube. A thin cotton rope is tied around neck and hangs down back. Head sits directly on the shoulders, with carved arms held close to body and fists at stomach. Torso is painted dark pink-red with patterning in yellow and green. A short white skirt has black, yellow, green and red square patterning down the right side, with wide legs and large feet emerging below and attached to a thick square base.

Small Kachina doll. Carved from wood, doll has a large head with a tall, square, rust and green headdress, feathers at rear, and a brim that protrudes over forehead. Face has a tubular nose and prominent chin. Rust and yellow torso holds arms tightly at sides, fists in front of stomach. Skirt is full and round, white, with a black and rust pattern down the right side. Legs emerge from below, with large rounded feet.

Small Kachina doll. Carved from wood, dark figure is short, with a large round head holding two small balls at back and on left side- to which is attached a small feather. Round eyes and mouth are painted on the face, along with three sets of short double white lines at midpoint. A thin cotton string surrounds the neck and hangs down the back of the doll. Torso is painted with a green neckerchief and white lines representing a shirt, with arms held close to sides and fists held at hips. Black checked skirt reaches to the knees and brown legs are adhered to bottom of doll.
