Under VestEd1.294

Openwork vest with a single back panel and two front panels made of lengths of rattan wrapped in rattan skin. Vest has a low neck at front and high inserts of curled rattan at back of neck, with shoulder extensions of loops of rattan. It is formed of parallel vertical lengths of rattan spaced 3 cm. apart with loops of rattan between them.

Hat with slightly curved brim and cylindrical crown that tapers slightly from its base to a flat crown. The structure of the hat is formed by fine split bamboo. Top of crown made of two layers of fine woven horse hair (?); outer layer of sides of crown and top of brim have one layer of the same material. Sides of crown and underside of brim lined with a layer of diagonal weave horse hair or coarse split bamboo. Four lines of stitching on sides of crown forming a cross at top. Small remnants of ribbon tie at side.

Doll representing a male figure carved out of wood with articulated shoulders and ankles. His face and hands are painted white with hair, eyebrows and eyes painted in black, and a mouth painted in pink. A braid hangs down his back, tied at the top with a long black ribbon on one half of which are adhered four square gold decorative elements. He wears a very pale blue hip-length silk jacket lined in white, lapped to his right and tied at the waist with a separate pink sash tied in a single-loop bow. The sleeves of the jacket are made of parallel bands of various bright colours. The jacket has a self-facing at the neck and a narrower white facing. Under it is a white cotton jacket that is slightly shorter. The figure wears full white cotton pants tucked into ankle wrappings which extend over white socks.

Open-top HoodEd1.292

Open-top hood made of black silk damask with long ear flaps to which are attached long ribbons of the same fabric. The damask is patterned with peony flowers. The hood is constructed of two halves sewn together at the centre of the forehead and centre back, but with an opening at the top edged with black piping ending with a short slit at the back. The hood is cut straight across the forehead with a convex curved edge along each side edged with black piping on each side. The long ear flaps project forward from the points where the forehead joins the sides. The hood is edged entirely with two layers of skin with black fur, one facing inside and the other facing outside. A flat purple silk cord crosses the opening from front to back, ending at the back in an elaborate knot made of dark pink cord, partially detached and crumpled, below which are five dark pink tassels wrapped in gold thread. At the front there an elaborate double knot of gold and pink cord, below which are seven dark pink tassels wrapped in gold thread. The hood is lined with bright blue rayon fabric, most of which is covered with white fibrous paper which is attached with long running stitches.

Cap of black silk damask with widely spaced roundels and floral motifs. The cap is made of two halves joined at a centre seam from front to back, except for the opening at the top, round when worn. This opening and the forehead area are edged with narrow piping. The edge of the cap is straight across the forehead, but then is cut at a right angle so that it covers the ears. The lower edge forms a circle from the right angle to the top opening. The outer fabric is folded under at the ears and threaded on a cord. The cap is lined with blue-green rayon damask with geometric stepped designs and roundels. A pink silk cord extends loosely across the top opening, attached at the centre front and back. At the back are suspended three pink tassels wrapped in silver thread. At the centre front is a complex knot design in pink cord, and five pink tassels.

The cap is made of two halves joined at a centre seam from front to back, except for the opening at the top, round when worn. This opening and the forehead area are edged with narrow piping. The outer fabric is folded under at the ears and threaded on a cord. The cap is lined with blue-purple rayon damask with floral designs. A purple silk cord extends loosely across the top opening, attached at the centre front and back. At the back are suspended three purple tassels wrapped in silver thread. At the centre front is a complex knot design in purple cord, and five purple tassels. At each side above the right angle is attached a silver-coloured metal ornament in the shape of a basket of flowers. At the end of the back seam is attached an ornament of the same metal in the shape of a bat or cicada. Pieces of white paper are pasted to the inside at both sides, and inside the forehead area.

Thirteen-sided polyhedron, planes terminating at shoulder and near base in smooth steeply curving surfaces. Grey-white dense porcelain body exposed at rim of wide mouth; low foot ring and base glazed, both thickly encrusted with fine gravel and dirt. Vessel entirely covered in dark brown glossy glaze with some iridescence, pulling away at shoulders and plane intersections to a light yellow-brown; displaying pooling and dripping, very dark brown, elsewhere.

Hat (a) made of two layers of finely woven black horsehair with a slightly tapering cylindrical crown, and a broad circular brim. Woven on circles of thin strips of split bamboo at the top of the crown, the base of crown, and the outer brim. Chin straps are of black silk lace ribbon. The separate hat lining (b) is made of more coarsely woven black horsehair that has a seam at the top and has a cord across the centre back to gather and fit to the head.
