Dance Apron2747/1

"Tofua" dance apron . Basketry top panel is of light grass, with a zigzag pattern woven into it, around which is inter-woven an acrylic blue wool border and a twisted green and yellow wool band. The hanging grass strands below the panel have been unraveled in spots and shredded into long thin fibres in others.

Large rectangular textile with light pink and blue designs on cream ground. The woven designs consist of large squares, alternating pink and blue. There is a wide border along two sides with a zigzag motif. Used as backing for tapa cloth (1060/79 a).

Tapa Cloth1060/79 a

Large rectangular bark cloth with designs in red-brown, brown and black, on the natural coloured ground. The designs consist of rows of triangles inside rectangles, with various motifs inside the triangles. There are also three narrow bands--one at each end, and one off-centre.

The cloth is rectangular and natural coloured with patterns painted in brown and black. The patterns are arranged in horizontal bands. The bands on the top and bottom edges are repeated brown lines. The next band is made of black squares with two natural coloured flowers in the centre and el borate diamond and triangle borders. The next band has a black background with repeated natural coloured, three-prong figures. Another band has a black background with a natural coloured chain pattern. The final band has natural coloured parallelograms with a central flower and scored edges on a brown background. The cloth is made of two pieces joined together.

The cloth is rectangular and natural in colour with designs painted in black and dark red. There is a narrow border along the edges decorated only with bunches of four red lines. Inside the borders are four horizontal panels. The first panel is wide and has large natural coloured flowers repeated on a red background. The next panel is thin and has natural coloured diamonds on a black background. The next panel is thin and has natural coloured, elongated X’s separated by double lines on a black background. The final panel is wide and has red sunburst designs bordered by triple rows of triangles on a natural coloured background. The cloth is made of two narrow pieces of cloth joined together in the centre.

The cloth is square and natural in colour with designs painted in brown. There is a border of squares set in from the edge. Opposite sides of the border have the same design within the squares; one is diamonds and the other is triangles. In the centre there are five panels; three horizontal flanked by a vertical panel on either side. The motif of four small squares arranged in a square with a heart turned outwards in each corner is repeated three times in each vertical panel. The upper and lower horizontal panels each repeat the motif twice. The centre panel has two triangles with lines extending down 2from the base. All designs are painted brown and outlined in a black-brown.

The cloth is rectangular and white-natural coloured with designs covering the entire surface stenciled in black and brown. There is a border along the edges of a white crest shape with black horizontal lines on a black background. Inside the borders are many repeated blocks of design. One block is square with many black and white linear borders leading to the centre with a white flower on a brown background. Another block has black triangles in each of the four corners and a brown pinwheel in the centre surrounded by black dots on a lightly painted brown background. Another block is rectangular with many black and white linear borders leading to the centre with a white flower with square petals on a black background. The centre block is rectangular with many black and white borders leading to two squares in the centre with triangles of brown, black and white. The cloth is made up of a wide and narrow piece attached together.

Dark brown wood, round in cross-section, with the shaft tapered to the butt, and carved from a single piece of wood. Conical point is smooth and carved with one longitudinal row of barbs 18-38 cm. from tip: one very long barb; six pyramidal and one elongated pyramidal barb; four pyramidal and one smaller elongated barb. Has six grooves, creating five upraised horizontal bands across the front. Three braided rattan sleeves each 7 cm. wide are 43-45.5 cm. from the tip.

Red- brown wood spear, round cross-section, with the shaft tapered to the butt, and carved of a single piece of wood. Conical point is smooth to 16.5 cm. from the tip with the remaining 67 cm. of the point carved with twenty-three sets of seven barbs all around.
