Byzantine coin of Theophilus, 829-842. Obverse: Theophilus, standing and facing front; he wears a loros, an embroidered and jewelled scarf, and a tufa, a crown with peacock feathers; to left, he holds a labarum, a military standard; to right, he holds a globus cruciger; to left, inscription says ‘ΘEOFIL; to right, ‘bASIL’. Reverse: there are four lines of inscriptions, which begin with a cross: ‘ΘEO/FILEAVS/OVST[E]SV/nICAS’. The Sear catalogue translates this inscription as: 'Theophilus Augustus May You Conquer'.
