Watercolour and ink painting of Zhongkui, king of ghosts in Chinese folklore, produced for the lunar New Year. Zhongkui rides on the back of a black tiger, flying over a mountainous landscape. He holds a flaming orb in one upraised hand. Two figures stand below on a hillside, one brandishing an unsheathed sword, the other hoding a brown ring with a diamond motif in both hands. The painting is adhered to a long scroll of heavy paper covered with white silk, attached to a wood scroll bar. A brown ribbon is attached at top.
Watercolour and ink painting produced for the lunar New Year. The image is of lady Magu, an immortal, protector of females, known as the Hemp Maiden. She carries a staff over her shoulder, balancing a basket of greenery and lotus flowers. To her left stands Shou Xing, the god of longevity. He holds a peachwood (?) staff in one hand and lifts a dried fruit to Magu with the other. To her other side is a child carrying a basket of immortal peaches. A black and red inscription in Chinese text is written above the figures. The painting is adhered to a long scroll of heavy paper covered in silk and attached to a black wood scroll bar. A brown ribbon is attached to the top of the scroll.
Cloth and wood puppet of a male figure. Head is wood, with white face and painted eyes, brows, mouth and hair. Long mustache and beard of plastic fibres emerge. Figure wears a tunic of patchwork fabrics in blue, red, green and pink, with a stripe of shiny red around neck to waist. Under this are padded legs attached to black and white boots that show under the tunic. Arms are held outstretched, with wooden hands attached. Thumb is stationary, while fingers are able to bend and flex as a group. Puppet can be controlled by inserting hand up the back of tunic to a hole in head and spaces along arms.
Small reclining figure of a woman (courtesan). Figure lies on her side on top of a robe that covers her at the waist. Folds in robe are accentuated with carved grooves and black paint. A pillow lies under her head. Figure’s hair is pulled back in an elaborate style, decorated with a flower. Her hair and face are carved and accentuated with paint and her shoes are painted red.
Charm carved from a piece of mother-of-pearl? it is roughly rectangular, with a rough scalloped back, and shaped cut-outs opposite. Colour is an iridescent white, with areas of orange and grey.
Inkstone carved from a single piece of speckled yellow and brown stone. Object is rectangular, with four low square feet carved on each bottom corner. Top front has a round shallow well, behind which lay two lions(?), with their bodies facing away from well, heads turned to look back over their shoulders. A second hollow has been carved between their tails. Remnants of decorative lines surround the inkwell area, and nearly invisible incised designs decorate all four edges.
Small carved jade plaque. Inside a solid rectangular border is carved a deer walking amongst heavy foliage. Texture and depth are carved into the images on the front while the back is smooth.
Large bi-disk. Disk is thin and flat, with a sustained thickness of material throughout. It is circular but for a large chip out of one side. A large round hole has been carved out of the centre. The disk is undecorated. Its colour is mottled light and medium grey with veins and specks of dark grey.
Figure is carved from a piece of jade coloured in mottled orange, grey and light brown. The shape is a long rectangle, slightly rounded on bottom, slightly pointed at top, with bevelled edges. Lines are carved into the piece to mimic the body of a cicada: on one side, a set is engraved horizontally at top and V-shapes at bottom. On opposite is a central line running vertically and splitting at top, with horizontal grooves at bottom. A hole is carved in the base to allow object to be threaded on a string.
Small jade carving of a sleeping goose. Bird sits on feet tucked beneath its body, wings gathered to its sides, neck twisted to allow head to rest on its back. The bird's feathers, facial features and feet are incised and emphasized with some kind of dark brown dye or pigment.
