Two piece urn, with body (part a) and lid (part b), both with a dragon head called ryūtō (龍頭) as well as floral motifs on the sides. Beige ground, with mottled turquoise, brown and green glazes. On the front side are holes associated with an empty space for affixing an epitaph panel (migachi).

Urn LidN2.1050

Blue glazed ceramic lid from a funerary urn. The large rectangular lid is in shape of a palace roof. The upper ridge has a pair of three-dimensional creatures called shachihoko (鯱鉾/鯱), a mythical sea creature with the head of a tiger or dragon and the body of a fish, protruding upward at each end. Between them on the front is a dragon head. The epitaph, called migachi or miigachi (ミガチ/ミーガチ/銘書) in Okinawan, is written along the bottom of the lid.

Urn LidN2.1048

Large ceramic lid from a funerary urn. The recangular lid is in the shape of a palace roof. At the end of the ridge of the roof are three-dimensional shachihoko (鯱鉾/鯱), a mythical sea creature with the head of a tiger or dragon and the body of a fish, projecting upward. On both sides are the heads of shishi (獅子), a mythical guardian lion, protruding outward. Glaze colours are predominantly turquoise and brown. The epitaph called migachi or miigachi (ミガチ/ミーガチ/銘書) in Okinawan is on the bottom of the urn lid.

Two piece urn, with body (part a) and lid (part b). Made in a style called goten-gata zushigame (御殿型厨子甕), an urn in the form of a palace. On the front are two Buddhist figures, each in the centre of a lotus, in relief, in turquoise on a dark brown ground. On the top of the lid, are two three-dimensional shachihoko (鯱鉾/鯱), a mythical sea creature with the head of a tiger or dragon and the body of a fish. On the front is an epitaph, called migachi or miigachi (ミガチ/ミーガチ/銘書) in Okinawan. There is another migachi under the lid.
