Knife3589/1 a-b

Ceremonial parang (part a) with scabbard (part b). Long knife has a cylindrical horn hilt that tapers towards top; rectangular protrusion extends from left side. Both top half of hilt and protrusion are hollowed out. Circular, curvilinear, linear, and fang-like motifs carved in relief along upper half of hilt; hilt grip covered with woven band of rattan. Holes are drilled into the tapered section of the hilt, for hanging purposes; hilt attached to blade with resin. Knife blade is convex on one side, slightly concave on the other, and widens from the hilt; back edge of point is tiered. Linear, "X" designs, geometric, and curvilinear motifs incised along front of blade. Scabbard is composed of wood sheath for the long knife, and has a smaller plant fibre and fabric sheath tied to back with rattan. Wood sheath is made of two pieces of wood bound together with rattan; upper two bands of rattan are plain, bottom four are tied decoratively. Panels decorated with floral and curvilinear motifs carved along front of wood sheath. Smaller sheath is undecorated and has two pieces of bamboo along the interior edges, providing shape. Long braided rattan cord, with looped ends, threaded through small sheath, for carrying purposes.

Long, thin rectangular textile with braided fringe on both short ends. Woven geometric patterns in light orange-yellow and dark purple-red on a bright orange-red background. Both sides are lined with solid vertical bands of red, light orange-yellow, dark purple-red, light orange-yellow, dark purple-red and then a thin red, working from the outside-in.

Cylindrical container with a short chain that has string on a wire handle to which a bone spatula is attached. Container is decorated with a design that consists of tapering ovals around the upper portion and semi-circles around the lower portion. Lid has toothed ends and is decorated with a design that consist of semi circles on the lower edge which are engraved and painted. Woven bands are around the container and lid.

Mat in a shield shape made of black and natural rattan to form a geometric design that consists of two wide, vertical bands of a plain zig zag on a black background. Appliqued red fabric along the diagonal sides that converge to a point with a heavily beaded panel in the space between. Beaded panel has a geometric design that consists of an open yellow diamond shape that has black shapes around a red diamond shape within while three white, black, and red diamond shapes are equally spaced around the bottom where there is a beaded fringe of the same colours. Blue, red, and white beads border the upper portion of the beaded panel. Two tooth-like objects are attached near the point.
