FROM CARD: "SIMILAR TO 20,687, EXCEPT IT HAS FIVE SECTIONS FORMING FOUR AIR TUBES AND IS LASHED WITH TWINE. 4 CHAMBERED."Ian Reid (Heiltsuk) of the delegation from Bella Bella, Bella Coola and Rivers Inlet communities of British Columbia made the following comments during the Recovering Voices Community Research Visit May 20th - 24th, 2013. The thickness of materials and chambers determine the sound. The reed is made from one intact piece of wood, determined by wood grain. It is a knifed piece.
Remains of blue paint are in mortar.
A paddle with a pointed blade and a crutch handle. The blade is painted with a red and black design with an eye, ovoids and U-forms. It is a distributive type of design which makes it difficult to ascertain the identity of the crest represented. A portion of solid black painting extends upwards from the blade towards the handle, this is broken by red bands. The designs are different on either side of the blade. On the other the eye has a possible foot or claw design beneath it instead of themouth on the other side.; Good
Clappers very finely carved in the form of a killerwhale. The killerwhale is expertly executed with U- forms and deep inlaid (haliotis) ovoids. Its mouth is painted red, and there are fins close to the sides of the body, the dorsal fin has a small humanoid face where the blow hole would be positioned, suggesting transformation. The tail is also the face of a bear with the bifurcating tail being its ears. The clappers are painted red, blue-green and black. The handle narrows, making the flexible join necessary to produce sound, the two pieces are pinned with a copper nail. The killerwhale section of the clappers are hollow.; Good
Straight wooden end blower or trumpet, of two halves bound together longitudinally, with bark at the mouth end and gut at the other. Four pieces of red ribbon are stretched across the air passage. Described on label as a dog-eater' s whistle.; Good
A small set of clappers painted red, green and black in the form of a ?bear cub or ?dog. The head of the creature is finely carved in classic northern style. The clappers are split in half and have been hollowed out, probably to allow the sound to reverberate in these chambers. An extremely narrow, and presumably once flexible, section extends towards the handle. The narrow section has been broken and pinned. The handle is bound together with twine. Metlahkatlah has been written in ink below the handle.; Good
A front or rear panel from a bent box which has been carved and painted with a double eyed face design. The paint is black and red, there are also faint traces of greenish blue paint in the eye-sockets. The edges of the panel are damaged but on one side the remnant of the bent corner is visible. The panel has had wood worm at some point .; Good
A carved and painted mask in the form of the noohlmahl, or fool. The mask is characterised by a large nose with flared nostrils, the cheek bones are high and rounded, the mouth upturned in a grin and the chin is pointed. The eyebrows are large, and painted red with cross-hatching while the eyes are rounded and staring. Around the edge of the mask is a carved rim, at the top appears to be carved in the form of hair, while below the pierced ears the rim has the appearance of twisted rope. Themask is painted, the lips and the eyes are red, the rim is black, and the forehead has two black curling designs with a central ovoid, similar curling designs extend below the eyebrows and accentuate the cheeks. The chin is similarly painted black, with a central cleft which accentuates the pointed appearance, the nostrils are also outlined in black to a similar effect. The inside of the mask has been finished to a high degree.; Good
