Table Cover Item Number: N2.204 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Rectangular cover with a floral and geometric design; the peony flower in pink and the clematis flower in orange, grey, and purple over clouds and haze. The left and right side have a blue background with two rows of black and white geometric designs. The central, rectangular panel is cream with red zigzag and curly lines behind pink, red, orange, purple, blue and navy flowers with green, dark green, blue and navy leaves.
The design is a result of using two traditional Ryūkyūan/Okinawan textile techniques. Ryūkyū bingata (琉球紅型; bingata, literally “red style”) is a traditional stenciled resist dying technique and Ryūkyū kasuri (琉球絣) is also a resist dyeing technique, both used in Okinawa. Both techniques started to be used around the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and developed during the Ryūkyū kingdom period (1429-1879). The blue dye may be one that is commonly referred to as "Prussian blue".
