History Of Use

Haori (羽織) or jacket/overcoat is a formal jacket worn over kimono. In the past, haori (羽織) was worn as an overcoat only by men, but now worn by both men and women. Decorated linings called gaku’ura (額裏) are usually used just for men’s haori.

The material is likely to be Kumejima tsumugi (久米島紬), the textile produced in Kumejima, Okinawa. Kumejima tsumugi is known for its mud-dyeing technique for dyeing yarns and it is recognized as one of the Important Intangible Cultural Properties of Japan.
