Tapa Cloth Item Number: C1005 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Tapa cloth with brown and black painted on natural ground. A grid-like border outlined with brown, runs around the outside and divides the designs into five rows. The words "OLEALAVAA" and "LILIA AND PEAUX MANUA" are incorporated into the border. The designs have geometric motifs within hand-drawn boxes. The edges are cut in a large zigzag pattern.
The donor wrote, in 1952, that the items (C1005-C1008) were collected by, or given to, her parents, around 1883 when they were staying near Lake Rotorua in New Zealand. Her father was Richmond B. Halded (British), who married Gertrude Fielding (British) in 1882.
