Spoon Item Number: C1540 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
A spoon that has a long handle finial of green jade. The metal part of the handle is twisted, and the bowl has a Maori-like figure in relief. Hallmarks include "L&S", an anchor, a lion, an "X", and a "6".
The figure in the bowl of the spoon is Pukaki, a Ngati Whakaue warrior. The history of Pukaki and his return to the community from the Auckland Museum is told in "Pukaki: A Comet Returns" by Paul Tapsell (2000).
The sliver hallmarks on the spoon indicate manufacture in Birmingham by Levi and Salaman. The date mark of X indicates a manufacture date of 1922.
