Retablo Altar Item Number: 3678/6 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Brightly painted portable retablo box altar with two doors that open to reveal a two-level religious scene. The doors have leather hinges, and are painted on both sides with blue, green and yellow floral designs on white backgrounds. The two levels have small painted plaster figures and animals arranged into two scenes. The top of the box is triangular, with a painted blue cross. The exterior of the box is painted yellow.
Fred Braches collected the piece when he was stationed in Peru, while working in the merchant navy.
