Description
Undecorated bentwood box with thick lid. Box, made of yellow cedar, is secured shut along the seam with four pegs; attached to a thin square base. Lid has a deep and wide lip, that protrudes out and completely covers the box opening. Base and lid both made of red cedar, and have rounded edges. Unsigned.
Narrative
The lid of the red cedar is old growth cedar that was harvested following a forest fire; the base is also red cedar but is not old growth.
Specific Techniques
The walls are steam-bent from a single plank of yellow cedar, the fourth corner was pegged closed (formerly this corner would have been pegged or sewn together), and the base was carved separately and then attached. Lid is done in the old style, with the lid closing over the sides of the box to prevent rodent access.
