Wrap Dress Item Number: 3587/1 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Woman's wrap-around dress (kira). The dress is composed of three woven panels stitched together on the long edge to create a rectangular fabric. Each panel is finished in chain stitch in either red and dark blue or light grey-green and light brown. The centre of the textile has a beige background with evenly spaced bands of stripes. On each side there is a section of alternating solid orange and navy blue bands on an off-white ground weave. Both sides have sections of navy blue, grey, and bright orange bands in various sizes on a dark orange ground weave. One side is heavily embroidered with alternating lines of dark blue or dark blue-green and red designs including meander, stepped pyramids, diamonds, and other motifs. Fringe on the short ends.
Rural style kira. The donor purchased this textile from Barbara Adams in 1985, in Kathmandu. It appears in her book, "Traditional Bhutanese Textiles" (1984; 2003).
