Description
Rectangular black shawl with wide patterned bands along the vertical edges. The black ground has a seam down the centre where the two halves were stitched together with black string. The edging of the right half is red, the other half is not edged. The patterned band on the right side is much thicker than the left. Both bands are made up of dark red stripes separating thinner patterned bands with zigzags, flowers, and bird motifs. The bands on the left are black and purple, those on the right are red and pink.
History Of Use
Worn by women as a shawl (ahuayo; mantle).
Specific Techniques
Supplementary warp, partial blanket stitch edging and partial tubular edging, tighter ancient stitch joining the two halves.
