Calligraphy Item Number: 3601/3 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Calligraphic work on paper; done in horizontal orientation. Design consists of black, white, and dark grey characters interwoven and overlapping at different angles across light grey surface. Undecorated border along all sides. Inscriptions written in bottom left corner on front and across back of paper; manufacturer's mark blind-embossed in bottom right.
These works were given as a gift to the donor's mother, Amina Mirza, in Lahore in 2017, by the artist. The artist states: "This is an art piece of an experimental typeface, designed and fused with the tradition of Arabic calligraphy. The typeface features the striking contrast between the extremely dark and light strokes. This composition [...] requires a more calligraphic approach."
Qalam's work is done free-hand, on a pencil grid.
