Description

Large wooden bowl with a wide lip and raised foot. Exterior body of bowl is covered in carved decorations; interior is plain. Design consists of ovals with semi-circles in between them; semi-circles are along the top and bottom edges. The semi-circles are filled with cross-hatching; the ovals alternate between two patterns. The first oval has a raised border and a plain interior; second is divided into four sections with diagonal lines, at different angles, throughout each. Bands also circle the rim and foot. The band design for the rim border is repeating chevrons; bottom border is plain lines. Base of foot is concave. Holes drilled along top edge of bowl, for attachments.

Narrative

The donor taught in a rural school in Tobli, eastern Liberia, from 1965 to 1967.
