Description

Fragment of a carved stone figure; only upper half of body. Figure has a pronounced forehead, bulging eyes and hooked nose. Long thin lips, slightly curved upward at the ends, are carved underneath wide nostrils. Protrusion along bottom of chin, imitating a beard(?). Oval-shaped ears are flat against sides of head. Figure has a thin torso and short arms, with rounded ends, held outward from body. Shoulders and back of neck are done in relief. Large hole drilled into top centre of head.

History Of Use

Nomoli figures are placed near homes and in crop fields as a form of protection, in the belief that the nomoli will bring good health and good harvests.

Narrative

The donor taught in a rural school in Tobli, eastern Liberia, from 1965 to 1967.
