Description

Square ceramic tile painted dark teal with different designs overtop. Surface and sides are glazed. Entire background is dark teal with black dots throughout. Light blue quarter circles in each corner, with scalloped edges and curvilinear motifs inside them. Motifs done in white and light yellow. Small white and light blue flowers, with yellow centres, across surface, with three large circles towards centre of tile. All circles have a black border, off-white background and central light yellow design. Circle towards the left side has a fish, with curved lines and dots in the background. Motifs are done in light blue, imitating water. Circle towards the top has a flower with multiple black offshoots. Additional light blue offshoots in background. Last circle, towards right side, has a flying crane with light blue stalks in the background. Raised grid across entire back of tile. Manufacturer’s mark, Mintons China Works, stamped diagonally between squares.

Specific Techniques

Tile was manufactured by dust-pressing, a technique that uses clay milled to a fine powder with low moisture content, then pressed in a die with the relief pattern at high pressure.
