Basket Item Number: 3489/13 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Rigid, cylindrical basket with wide lip. It tapers to a smaller base, with a high ring foot. Base is made of wood, sides made of strips of rattan(?). Strips are tied together, at intervals, with braided plant fibre and plastic. Strips are solid at base of basket, before splitting in two at the midpoint. Structure of basket formed with interior coils of rattan(?). Two coils along top edge. Large panel of bark attached to back of basket. Panel has three, wide braided straps secured to the sides and top.
Carrying basket; worn like a backpack, with straps over the shoulders and around the neck.
Acquired by the donor in 1976-1978, when he lived and worked in Sabah, on the island of Borneo, as a volunteer with CUSO International.
