Description

Byzantine coin of Constantine VII, 913-959. Obverse: bust of Romanus I, co-emperor from 920-944, facing front; he wears a crown with cross and a jewelled chlamys; to left, he holds a labarum, a military standard, on a diagonal angle; to left, inscription says ‘RWMAnbAS’; to right, ‘IL…W’; there is a cross after the ‘W’, then ‘LE’. Reverse: there is an inscription of four lines, which begins with a cross, and says ‘RWMA/nEnΘE[WbA]/SILEVSR[W]/M[AIWn]’. The inscription on the reverse in translation says ‘Romanus, by the Grace of God, King of the Romans’. Coin has been overstruck, causing some confusion on each side.
