Obverse: bust of Michael III, facing front; he wears a crown with cross and a loros, an embroidered and jewelled scarf; to left, he holds a patriarchal cross on a globe; to left, inscription says ‘MIhAEL’; to right, ‘IMPERAT’. Reverse: bust of Basil I, his associated ruler, facing front; he wears a crown with cross and a loros, an embroidered and jewelled scarf; to left, he holds a patriarchal cross on a globe; to left, inscription begins with a cross, and then says ‘bASIL’; to right, it says ‘IϤSREX’.
