Description

Byzantine coin of Philippicus, 711-713. Obverse: bust of Philippicus, facing front; he wears a loros, an embroidered and jewelled scarf; to left, he holds a globus cruciger; to right, he holds a long sceptre, with an eagle at its top; above, there is an upside-down ‘CON’, which belongs to a previous coin. Reverse: large ‘M’; to left, ‘ANN[O]’ in a vertical position; to right, ‘I’; above, cross; beneath, there is an upside-down patriarchal cross, a variation on the Christian cross, which belongs to a previous coin. Coin has been overstruck, causing some confusion on both sides.
