Coin Item Number: 3095/879 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Byzantine coin of Phocas, 602-610. Obverse: Two rulers standing and facing front, both wearing crowns; Phocas is on the left, holding a globus cruciger; Empress Leontia, who has a halo, is on the right, holding a long cruciform sceptre; between their heads, there is a cross; to left, inscription says ‘OMFOCA’; to right, it is illegible. Reverse: large ‘M’; to left, ‘ANNO’ in a vertical position; to right, ‘II’; above, cross; in exergue, ‘CONΓ’. There are also several difficult to read letters to the left of the ‘ANNO’ on the reverse. This indicates that the coin was overstruck on an earlier coin, probably belonging to emperor Maurice Tiberius.
