Description

Byzantine coin of Phocas, 602-610. Obverse: bust of Phocas, facing front, with consular robes and crown with cross; to left, inscription says ‘ONFOCAS’; to right, it is illegible. Reverse: large ‘XXXX’; to right, ‘IIII’ in a vertical position; above, ‘AN[N]O’; in exergue, ‘CONΓ’. Above the ‘ANNO’ on the reverse there are more letters, which say ‘ONMAV’. This indicates that this coin was overstruck on a coin from the previous emperor, Maurice Tiberius.
