Description

Byzantine coin of Maurice Tiberius, 582-602. Obverse: bust of Maurice Tiberius, facing front, in consular robes and crown with trefoil ornament; to left, he holds a mappa; to right, he holds an eagle-tipped sceptre; inscriptions are badly blundered; to left, it says ‘MAUΓI’; to right, ‘PAUT’. Reverse: large ‘M’; to left, ‘[A]NNO’ in a vertical position; to right, ‘XIIII’ in a vertical position; above, cross; beneath, ‘Γ’; in exergue, ‘THEϤP’, with a diagonal line after the ‘P’.
