Carved canoe paddle. Elaborate design painted in red and black on the blade, on both sides. Entire paddle heavily shellacked.

History Of Use

Canoe paddles like this were probably made to be sold to non-Indigenous collectors. Producing collectible objects became a way for carvers and painters to continue their traditions during a time of great cultural change.

Listed by Raley as collected in Kitamaat, but painting style attributed to a Heiltsuk maker, Captain Carpenter.
