Description

Paint dish, or mortar. Heavy rough block of stone. Top hollowed out to form dish. Grooves in the bowl of the dish worn smooth through use. Remains of both red and black colours in the grooves.

History Of Use

Paint pot or palette - also mortar for grinding paints.

Cultural Context

Red was made traditionally from earth ochres, black from mud or charcoal mixed with oils.
