Description

A woman's red cotton twill cap, trimmed around the face with white lace frill and having multi-coloured embroidered ribbon with floral motifs, rickrack, and braid decorating the hat horizontally around the middle. The main design is consisting of the following from top to bottom: a pattern of sideways red tulip-like pairs on a white background, an orange-green floral pattern on a red background, and a blue diamond-shaped pattern with red centres. The crown is gathered onto a 9 cm. headband with small ear flaps. There are ties under chin with twisted fibre strings. Headband is lined with cotton broadcloth. Edges are bound with cotton bias tape.

History Of Use

Women's hats are, generally speaking, smaller and more conservatively decorated than men's. There is considerable variation in the trimming of all clothing to distinguish one regional group from another. This hat fits close to the head.

Narrative

Collected from Mrs. Siegrid Johanson-Labba by Wilhelm Helmer, along with 737/1, 737/3-4. The items were presumably worn together. It is uncertain whether Mrs. Johanson-Labba also made the items.
