Description

A brown wood club with a fiddle-like shape and a cylindrical handle that has a large knob at the end. Both sides are carved with a similarly bilaterally symmetrical and geometrically stylized designed face which has circular inlaid shell eyes. The headdress of one, however, has three horizontal sections of vertical patterning while the headdress of the other has v-shaped patterning with a vertical line down along the middle.

Narrative

The donor wrote, in 1952, that the items (C1005-C1008) were collected by, or given to, her parents, around 1883 when they were staying near Lake Rotorua in New Zealand. Her father was Richmond B. Halded (British), who married Gertrude Fielding (British) in 1882.
