Description

Print depicting people on a boat heading to shore. On shore there is a village with people and livestock walking near the shore. The village is denoted by trees and groups of buildings. There is a mountain in the far background. Print is of Kawasaki Station (#2). This is one of a series of reproductions of the "53 Post Stations on the Tokaido Hwy," from Nihonbashi to Kyoto (Hoei-do edition). Print is matted on a piece of white-yellow paper and has an additional cover page that folds over the print. A printed inscription on the cover page reads: " KAWASAKI Now a centre for heavy industries between Tokyo and Yokohama. In olden times people crossed the Rokugo Rover by ferry boat. The modern iron bridge at Kawasaki now bears no resemblance to this print. Upstream, however, one may find a similar view." There are Japanese characters at the top, bottom, and side of the printed message.

This series (Hoeido Edition) was reproduced by Nihon Hanga Kenkyu-Sho Ltd. (Japan Institute for the Study of Woodblock Prints) through the skill of renowned modern engravers; it took three years to complete.
