Description

Print depicting a group of men carrying boxes and baskets over their shoulders while crossing an arched bridge. Image of Nihonbashi Station (the departure point). This is one of a series of reproductions of the "53 Post Stations on the Tokaido Hwy," from Nihonbashi to Kyoto (Hoei-do edition). The print is mounted on a white-yellow piece of paper and has an additional cover page that flips up. Cover page has a printed inscription that reads: "NIHON-BASH Fifty-five prints depict the post stations between the starting point of the Tokaido at Nihonbashi in Yedo or Tokyo and its end at Sanjo in Kyoto. Distances from Tokyo are still officially measured from this ancient starting point." This inscription is accompanied by Japanese characters on the top, side and bottom of the printed message.

Narrative

This series (Hoeido Edition) was reproduced by Nihon Hanga Kenkyu-Sho Ltd. (Japan Institute for the Study of Woodblock Prints) through the skill of renowned modern engravers; it took three years to complete.
