Description
Woman's red wool hat. Hat is trimmed with wide bands composed of many rows of multi-coloured embroidered ribbon, rickrack, and braid. Puffy, high crown is gathered onto the contoured headband which ends in long ear flaps secured under the chin with red ribbon ties. Partially lined with multi-coloured striped cotton canvas. Front edge eased to fit closely around the face.
History Of Use
Women's hats differ from men's both in form and pattern and are, generally speaking, smaller and more conservatively decorated than men's. There is considerable variation in the trimming of all clothing to distinguish one regional group from another. The design of costumes at Kautokeino were particularly elaborate at the time this item was collected (1972).
