Description

Cigarette case with hinged lid. The body is carved from one piece of wood with a beveled edge. The lid is attached with metal hinge and is carved in relief with a maple leaf, a moose head, a scalloped border, and numeric symbols in the lower corners. Carved in relief on the maple leaf is a moose head with inscriptions: C.E.F. 225 KOOTENAY BATTALION CANADA.

Narrative

Possibly made by a Turkish prisoner on Cyprus, during WWI. The 225th Battalion, CEF was a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during WWI. Based in Fernie, BC, the unit began recruiting in 1916, in the Kootenay area. After sailing to England, in January the battalion was absorbed into the 16th Reserve Battalion, February 6, 1917.
