Petroglyph rubbing on long fiber tissue paper with black ink. K. Meyers 7/24/2003 From "Descriptive Catalogue of Petroglyph Prints for the University of Washington, from The Dalles Dam Resevoir, 1956." by Mark Hedden, located in the Archeology Archives: "Monster", curvilineur (sic) patterns. Center stem ending in fork at upper end and circle at lower end, through heart-shaped body with "eyes". Body marked by "rib" pattern of straight diagonals (five on each side) sloping down to outline (of body). Numerous curvilineur (sic) and intersecting "appendages" start from body outline, some with circles at terminations. Spaces formed by the intersection of these lines are sometimes dotted. A second abstraction, to the left, is enclosed by a roughly heartshaped outline (on a different axis from the first), traversed by three parallel lines, which are, in turn, intersected by two other parallels, and an arc. The outline has numerous rays, some of which are extensions of the inner lines. The design is reminescent of two abstractions called "fish" on Petroglyph Island (Pe 42). A quadruped, possibly mt sheep, with a vertical (a rider?) appears above left. Above right can be seen small irregular lines which appear to duplicate the "monster".
