Basketry Tray Item Number: Nd585 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Small round coiled cedar root tray with watch-spring coil construction and two handles. Handles are formed from top two rows of coils. Rim and handles have braided edges. Side walls consist of four rows of coils that have been decorated with black beading. Two sets of beaded cherry bark circles in centre of tray, both have a row of red, then one of black, then another of red. The last set also have imbricated designs above them - half diamonds which alternate in colour, red and black.
The designs on this tray are referred to by Nlaka'pamux basket makers as half diamonds. The diamond is associated with good luck according to Nlaka'pamux basket maker Minnie Peters. This is a design that she uses. It was given to her by her mother.
