Tumplines are usually tied to baskets or bundles of cedar bark and used when both hands are needed for climbing or collecting. The woven band is worn against the forehead.
Raley, the collector, was Principal at the Coqualeetza residential school in Sardis BC. His catalogue listed this piece as a "Lower Fraser Woven head band for packing burden baskets."
