Coin-Like Charm Item Number: Edz4164 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Round charm with a four-sided hole at the centre, and a rim around the outer edge and centre hole. The same four Chinese characters appear in seal-script on both faces.
Design similar to a coin, but too large to circulate; probably used for hanging or display; not from the period it purports to be from. (Larson, David) Due to its strong Daoist connotations, imitations were made of this currency in later periods to be used in ritual contexts or for personal ornamentation. This charm/coin was not intended to be a forgery as no obvious efforts were made to ensure the imitation closely resembled the original. (Li, Min)
