Description

Carved figure representing the legendary river monster "Waisana". Upper half of fish-shaped carving narrows from centre out towards both ends. The figure is painted black and has hooked motifs and six circular hollows carved out along its length. Lower portion is unpainted and has a drilled hole in the centre that fits on peg of rectangular wooden stand.

Narrative

Apparently after hearing the legend of Waisana, Cranmer was challenged to carve a representation of the river monster.
