Berry Basket Item Number: Nd581 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Coiled burden basket in a traditional trapezoidal shape. Beaded cherry bark in bands decorate the basket. One side of the basket has two hide loops to which a denim fabric tumpline style carrying strap has been attached.

History Of Use

According to Nlak'pamux Elder Shirley Sterling this type of basket was used for picking berries. The loops on the basket are where it was attached to a belt worn around the waist. This left the hands free for picking. Small baskets such as this one would be emptied into a larger basket that was placed on the ground nearby according to Nlaka'pamux Elder and basket maker Minnie Peters.
