Description

Rectangular mat with a plaited checkerboard pattern. There is a double band of dark cedar around the edges of the mat, crossed at the corners. The edges are finished by overcasting on a wide core of cedar bark.

Used for sitting, kneeling, lying on; as a cover for canoes; a divider or weather protection in shelters; as back protection under a burden basket; as wrapping material; or as gifts for guests.

Checkerboard: weft strand crosses over and under one warp strand. Black dye: year-old cedar bark is buried in black mud for a few days, then washed.
