Paddle Item Number: Nb629 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Wooden paddle, painted and varnished on both sides. Design shows pencil marks, handle is red with small design of red and black bands. Lower section painted in red, black and blue. Blade is relatively flat with curved edges and tip, and handle is cylindrical near the centre of the paddle, but flattens towards the cylindrical handle grip.
Canoe paddles like this were probably made to be sold to non-Indigenous collectors. Producing collectible objects became a way for carvers and painters to continue their traditions during a time of great cultural change.
