Mask Item Number: A5297 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Mask of a human face. Dark red/yellow-brown face has circular cut out hole eyes surrounded by a tapering and an area around the eyes that is recessed in suggestion of an ovoid shape with black brows above. The nostrils are cut out as is the thinly parted, slightly downturned mouth. The chin is pointed. Around the eyes and the cheeks, there is a black-painted delicate design consisting of a pair of u forms that have diagonal lines within. Remains of red paint in some areas. Leather thongs are attached with nails to the sides and the top of the mask at the rear.
No provenance information on file, prior to Walter Koerner donating it. There is a note on the back of a photograph in the CMH archives, from Marius Barbeau that says: "Mask, human face. Presumably by Amos Collison of Kitkatla". The artist and location attribution are only based on his comment.
