Textile Item Number: Sa295 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
Rectangular textile of woven cotton; striped fabric sample with pinked edges. Stripes vary in width. Repeating stripe sets in black, brown and yellow on a red ground. Red weft runs through all. White adhesive tag reads '8'. Red thread flaw runs through lengthwise on one side.
This sample is from a plain weave textile, woven on a commercial treadle loom. Men operate these looms in co-operative or factory enterprises. These textiles are produced mainly for skirts, shawls, and shirts. Although textile patterns were formerly distinguishable between towns, adaptation of patterns from town to town, makes establishing the origin of a modern commercial textile virtually impossible (Anderson).
